A flowering spotted coralroot (Corallorhiza maculata) rises over the duff in Tahoe National Forest, northern California. This curious member of the orchid family resides entirely underground except for its inflorescence. Lacking photosynthetic capacity, the spotted coralroot obtains nutrients by parasitizing fungal mycelia.
