As the fall season approaches, many gardeners follow the advice passed on by California horticulturalists - Fall Planting is Best - especially for plants that need to be well established before next summer. So Canyon Creek Nursery & Design is having a plant sale of California Native and other Mediterranean climate plants just in time for Fall planting.

Canyon Creek Nursery & Design will be offering California native plants as well as choice plants from Mediterranean climates: plants that are adapted to our climate - that survive our long, hot, dry summers with little water. They will be donating 30% of native plant sales to the Mount Lassen Chapter of CNPS. Jennifer Jewell and John Whittlesey will have their respective books The Earth in Her Hands - 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants available and The Plant Lover’s Guide to Salvias available for purchase and signing as well. Deb Halfpenny, the horticulture chair of the Mount Lassen chapter will be there to chat with folks about native plants and garden design.

Rob Schlising has generously donated seeds from his garden that will be available in packets – 100% of the sales of his seeds will be donated to the Mount Lassen Chapter of CNPS. Rob, whose incredible garden has been on the CNPS/Altacal garden tour several times, grows a wide array of plants to attract native bees specifically. A large part of his plan to attract native bees has been to grow a wide variety of California annuals. He is sharing seed from 14 species of plants that have performed well in his Chico garden.

Tim Hanson will also have a variety of wild buckwheats (Eriogonum species) available to purchase, with 30% of the sales being donated to the Chico State Herbarium. Up to 20 different types of wild buckwheat will be available, from large shrubs (e.g., Eriogonum giganteum, Eriogonum fasciculatum) to mat-forming species (e.g., Eriogonum ovalifolium, Eriogonum kennedyi) perfect for a rock garden.

The hosts look forward to connecting with like-minded plants people for an autumn gardener’s day out - strolling the garden, enjoying one another’s company in a pleasant setting under the majestic oaks along the creek. There is plenty of open space and fresh air for appropriate physical distancing, parking and sanitation stations will be available as you come in and head back out.
