Kyle will discuss how human use of fire has changed from pre-colonization to modern times in Butte County, ranging from valley savanna ecosystems to forested and woodland ecosystems in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. He will explore why fire has been intentionally applied to the land, why it has been excluded during different periods of time, and how our current landscapes have developed under these divergent histories. Kyle will follow-up with a discussion of what fire management might look in the future.
Bio: I am a California Climate Action Corps fellow at CSU Chico's Office of Tribal Relations and I'm an employee with the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve, where I'm in the process of finishing a comprehensive ethnography report about fire in Butte County at the reserve. I also help manage and process data for an eddy covariance flux tower that is on the Reserve. I enjoy connecting with the land and life however I can.
