Maintaining Native Plants in the Garden

So you’ve removed your lawn and transformed your landscape into an attractive, climate appropriate garden, full of seasonal native plants and wildlife. But after a few years maybe it has become a little scruffy – in need of tending. While often the hope is for a ‘low’ maintenance garden, the reality is all gardens need some maintenance, whether native plant gardens or otherwise. It can be difficult to know if a plant should be cut back hard or thinned – and to know the best time to do it. This day-long workshop will cover the cultivation and maintenance of native plants in the garden. We will discuss planting, irrigation, pruning and some propagation of various trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials and annuals.
Presenters John Whittlesey and Rob Schlising, are interested in growing native plants and passionate about attracting pollinators and flower visitors into the garden. John is owner/operator of Canyon Creek Nursery & Design - specializing in converting lawns to climate-appropriate wildlife friendly gardens. Rob, Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, Chico State, tends to a beautiful, mostly native garden which attracts over 50 species of bees and is regularly featured on Chico’s CNPS/Audubon Native Plant Garden Tour.
We’ll spend the morning in the Chico State Herbarium discussing what a native plant garden entails – design, soils, planting, irrigation and overall maintenance. The afternoon will be hands-on in Rob’s garden, seeing best practice techniques for planting, pruning, deadheading, watering and more.
This workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 21st 2019, in Room 129 Holt Hall, on the Chico State University Campus. The registration fee is $60 personal, $40 student (only 2 seats available at the student price). You must register in advance, using the form linked to below. Class size is limited to 20 participants; class will be cancelled on Sept. 13th if there are not at least 10 registered participants.
