Workshop Flier

This workshop will be an exploration into the beauty and diversity of monkeyflowers (genus Diplacus, Erythranthe, Mimetanthe) fo-cusing on our northern region and some special statewide stand-outs. There will be a shallow dive into the monkeyflower keys in the new Jepson eFlora; with helpful advice and practical in-lab hands-on keying experience (2-3 hours). The monkeyflower keys are not easy to use, but can be simplified by recognizing the sub-genera, terminology and also using geographical awareness. There will be a number of short PowerPoint presentations to see all locally common monkey flowers and also look at some of the beautiful, fantastic and rare monkeyflowers spread throughout the state. Participants in the workshop are encouraged to bring in some monkeyflowers that they have collected, especially if they can safely* collect enough for multiple students to use, bonus points for any monkey flowers that aren’t part of the Erythranthe guttata group or sticky monkeyflower.

Steve Schoenig has been photographing, studying and describing new monkey flowers for over 40 years in California. He is retired from a state government career, both supervising the state's noxious weed eradication program and supervising the CNDDB and veg mapping programs at California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The workshop will run from 9:00-4:00 on Saturday, 1 June 2024, in Holt Hall room 129 at CSU, Chico. You may bring your own lunch or dine at a local restaurant.
