Dr. Love will discuss how they use imaged herbarium specimens to study intra-specific variation in phenological responses in a widely distributed California wildflower, the mountain jewel flower (Streptanthus tortuosus; Brassicaceae). Using ~750 specimens, they were able to document region-specific phenological shifts and assessed the potential drivers of these divergent responses.  It is projects like this that illustrate the goals and objectives of the California Phenology (CAP) Network ( https://www.capturingcaliforniasflowers.org/) of which the Chico State Herbarium is a part of.  The project promotes public access to herbarium specimens through digitization which in turn helps to advance our understanding of variation in plant phenology and expands the capacity of the botanical community.

Bio: Dr. Natalie Love is a postdoctoral researcher and Frost teaching fellow at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where she is currently teaching botany courses. In her spare time, she likes to draw, explore the local wine scene, and bake sourdough bread.
