There are many pests and diseases that cause decline in oak trees. Invasive beetle species are especially concerning: the Gold-spotted Oak Borer (GSOB), Invasive Shot Hole Borers (ISHB), and the new and potentially devastating Mediterranean Oak Borer (MOB) are killing both native and landscape trees. We will explore common and emerging pests of oaks, including a discussion of the biology of the pests and common symptoms and signs of infection.
1 CEU credit will be available to arborists affiliated with ISA
Michael Jones, PhD, Forest Advisor, UC Cooperative Extension – Mendocino, Lake & Sonoma Counties.
Michael conducts an extension forestry program that focuses on helping keep oak woodlands and coastal conifer forests healthy and resilient to future disturbance. His program encourages good stewardship by providing information, resources, and technical advice through education and re-search. Michael earned his PhD in Entomology at State University of New York, Environmental Science and Forestry. He has studied many endemic and invasive forest pest issues, including Mediterranean oak borer, goldspotted oak borer, sudden oak death, and the invasive shothole borers.
Curtis Ewing, Forest Entomology and Pathology Program, CAL FIRE, Cascade and Northern Sierra Region.
Dr. Curtis Ewing is a Senior Environmental Scientist with CAL FIRE, in the Forest Entomology and Pathology Program. Curtis earned a PhD in Forest Entomology from Cornell University and has studied plant-fungus-beetle disease dynamics in California and Hawai’i. He has also studied Lyme disease ecology, monitored invasive species, organized the annual Insect Pavilion for the State Fair at Cal Expo in Sacramento, and many other aspects of insect diversity, ecology, systematics, taxonomy and diversity.
